Gandhinagar Thermal Power Station

Gandhinagar Thermal Power Station is located in the Thermal Power Plant Area of Sector 30 in Gandhinagar district of Gujarat. It is sited on the bank of Sabarmati river, nearer to Gandhinagar. The power station is also nearer to Ahmedabad. It is a Coal Based Power Station. The overall installed capacity of the Power Station is 870 Megawatt, consist of of units of 120 Megawatt each (Unit 1 and Unit 2), three units of 210 MW each (Unit 3, Unit 4 and Unit 5) with a complete installed capacity of 870 Megawatt. The first and second units are retired from service with effect from 03 September 2016 and the Power Capacity has reduced to 630 Megawatt with effect from 03 September 2016.

Gandhinagar Thermal Power Station is commissioned in March 1977. The approved capacity of this thermal power plant is 630 Megawatt. The installed capacity is also 630 Megawatt. The status of this thermal power plant is also operational. The primary fuel used for the generation of power from this power plant is Coal. The type of Coal used is Bituminous.

The type of power plant is Subcritical. Gandhinager Thermal Power Station is owned and operated by the Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited which is an undertaking of Government of Maharashtra. The Unit Size of this Thermal Power Plant is 630 Megawatt (210 Megawatt x 3 units). There are 3 units in Operational, they are from Unit 3 to Unit 5.

In Stage 1, there are two units – Unit 1 and Unit 2. The first unit is commissioned in 13 March 1977 with an installed capacity of 120 Megawatt. The second unit is commissioned in 10 April 1977 with an installed capacity of 120 Megawatt. Both of first and second units are now retired. In Stage 2, there are three units from Unit 3 to Unit 5. The third unit is commissioned in 20 March 1990 with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt. The fourth Unit is commissioned in 20 July 1991 with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt. The fifth unit is commissioned in 17 March 1998 with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt. In Stage 2, all the three units are Operational.
