Vallur Thermal Power Station

Vallur Thermal Power Station is a power plant erected at Athipattu Pudunagar of Vallur in the district of Thiruvallur in India. The power station is controlled by the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, which has three units with 500 Megawatt each.

Initially the plant was built under a mega power project. The project was a joint venture of NTPC Limited and TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation). The foundation stone of the power plant is laid in 5th September 2007, with an approved cost of INR 80 billion. The project was constructed in two phases. In the first phase, two 500 Megawatt is installed with an approved cost of INR 54 billion. Similarly in the second phase, one 500 Megawatt is installed with an approved cost of INR 30 Billion. It was in the January month of 2014, the units in the power plant generated a record of 24.09 million units of power.

The Vallur Thermal Power Station is commissioned in October 2010. The total approved Capacity of Vallur Thermal Power Station is 1500 Megawatt and has an installed capacity of 1500 Megawatt. The status of all units of power station is Operational. The plant will take 4.62 mt of coal a year. So the coal for the generation of power in plant is imported from the Orissa through ship to Ennore port and it is brought to the plant by Road. The primary fuel used for the production of power is Coal. The power plant is a joint venture of National Thermal Power Corporation Limited and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO). The Beneficiary state of this Vallur thermal power station is Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry. From 1500 Megawatt generated, Tamil Nadu takes the 50 percent, that is 750 Megawatt and rest goes to Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Puducherry. The approved investment for the installation of the thermal power plant is around INR 91.93 Billion.

The unit sizes of this thermal power plant is 1500 Megawatt (3 x 500). There are three Units in operation. They are Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3. The first unit is commissioned in 29 November 2012 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. While the second unit is commissioned in 25 August 2013 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. The third unit is commissioned in 28 February 2014 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt.
