The Tuticorin Thermal Power Station is maintained and functioned by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation. The power station is erected near the newly constructed Tuticorin Port and is located in Thoothukudi harbour Estate, which is around 8 km away from Tuticorin Town. The original power station comprises five 210 Megawattproducing units that is commissioned between the years, 1979 and 1992. Coal for the Tuticorin thermal power station (which is situated near the Tuticorin Port) is transported by sea through ships from the Haldia, Paradeep and Vizag ports to Tuticorin Port.

Tuticorin Thermal Power Station is commissioned in 9th July 1979. The approved capacity of the thermal power plant is 1050 Megawatt and the installed capacity is also 1050 Megawatt. The status of the Tuticorin Power Station is Operational. The primary fuel used is Coal. The type of coal is Bituminous. The source of coal is domestic coals, from the coal fields of Orissa, Bengal & Bihar and imported coal from Indonesia and Russia. The source of water is Thamirabarani River. And for the purpose of cooling, water is sourced from sea water from Harbour Basin. The power plant is using the Sub Critical Technology. The owner and operator of Tuticorin Thermal Power Station is Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).

The beneficiary states of the power station are Tamil Nadu and other nearby South Indian states. The approved cost of different units in plant are 178 crores for Stage 1, 89 crores for Stage 2 and 804 crores for Stage 3. The unit sizes of the power plant is 1050 Megawatt (210 Megawatt x 5 units). There are five units in operation and they are from Unit 1 to Unit 5 which are built in 3 stages. In stage 1, the firstand second units are commissioned in 09 July 1979 and 17 December 1980 respectively with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt for each units. Similarly in Stage 2, the third unit is commissioned in 16 April 1982 with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt. After that in Stage 3, the fourth and fifth units are commissioned in 11 February 1992 and 31 March 1991 respectively with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt for each units.
