Santaldih Thermal Power Plant

The Santaldih Thermal Power Plant is situated at Santaldih town of Purulia District in West Bengal, India. The total installed capacity of Santaldih Thermal Power Station is 980 MW.

This is a sub critical thermal power plant. Here Coal is used as the primary fuel and fuel oil is used as the secondary fuel. The electric power grid is connected to the regional grid and the operator is West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited. The source of water for the power plant is from Damodar River (Panchet Dam Reservoir) which is eight kilometer away from the site. The plant has six installed units and the commissioned dates of these units are as follows,

Unit 1 – 1 January 1974

Unit 2 – 25 August 1975

Unit 3 – 6 December 1978

Unit 4 – 30 March 1981

Unit 5 – 7 November 2007

Unit 6 – 29 June 2011

All the first four units have an installed capacity of 120 MW each. The fifth and sixth units have an installed capacity of 250 MW each. ABL Durgapur (first four units) and BHEL (fifth and sixth units) are the boiler manufacturers for the plant. Here the plant is using Coal as fuel. The turbine and generator manufacturer of the plant is Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited of Bhopal, India. The owner of the plant is West Bengal SEB. The type of ownership is IPP (State Government). The West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited is the operating company of the plant.
