Rihand Super Thermal Power Station is located at Renukut city in the district of Sonbhadra of Uttar Pradesh, India. The power plant is one among the coal based power plants of National Thermal Power Corporation Limited. Rihand Super Thermal Power Station has an installed capacity of 3000 Megawatt with Stage 1 being 1000 Megawatt and Stage 2 being 2000 Megawatt. The First unit was commissioned in March 1988. The coal for the power plant is sourced from Amlori and Dudhichua mines. The water source is from Rihand Basin that is built on the Son River.

The Rihand Super Thermal Power Plant is commissioned in 1988. It has an approved capacity of 3000 Megawatt. The installed capacity for stage 1 is 1000 Megawatt and the installed capacity for stage 2 is 2000 Megawatt. The status of this thermal power plant is Operational. The source of coal for the generation of power is Amlori and Dudhichua Expansion Mines, whereas the water is sourced from Rihand Basin. The primary fuel utilized is coal. The owner and sponsor of this thermal power plant is National Thermal Power Corporation Limited. The beneficiary states of this thermal power plant were Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, HP, J & K, Punjab, Rajasthan, UP and Uttranchal. The approved investment for this thermal power plant is INR 2400 Crore for Stage 1 and INR 3500 Crore for Stage 2. The unit size is 5 x 500 Megawatt.

There are six units in operation. They are Unit 1 to Unit 6. The first unit was commissioned in March 1988 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. The second unit was commissioned in July 1989 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. After that third unit was commissioned in January 2005 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. The fourth unit was commissioned in September 2005 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. After a gap of seven years, the fifth unit was commissioned in May 2012, with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. The sixth unit was commissioned in October 2013 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. The international assistance provided for the Rihand Super Thermal Power Project is by the United Kingdom.
