Nabinagar Thermal Power Project

The Nabinagar Thermal Power Project is a joint venture of National Thermal Power Corporation Limited and the Indian Railways to set up a 4 X 250 Megawatt thermal power plant at Nabinagar in Bihar. The equity shares must be 74 percent for National Thermal Power Corporation and 26 percent for the Indian Railways. Nearly 90 percent of the electricity produced from the power plant is distributed to the Indian railway network to meet countrywide necessities and rest of the 10 percent is given to Bihar.

In the year 1989, the then Chief Minister of the state, Satyendra Narain Singh perceived, the suggestion to build a National Thermal Power Corporation's thermal power plant at the village of Nabinagar in Aurangabad. At that time, the then Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi approved the construction of power plant; but the project went into halfway as the next state governments unsuccessful to follow it. It again sees the light in 2007, when Manmohan Singh's central government lastly put an earmark of approval on it. The joint venture MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) was contracted on 6th Nov 2007 and the organisation was incorporated on 22nd Nov 2007. Commercial production was started from Unit-1 and Unit 2 (unit size of 2 x 250 Megawatt) in 2016.

Nabinagar Thermal Power Project is commissioned in 2016 March. It has an approved capacity of 1980 Megawatt and also the installed capacity is 1980 Megawatt. The source of coal for the generation of power in power plant is taken from North Karanpura Coalfield of Central Coalfields limited. Whereas the source of water is from the Sone River (Indrapuri Barrage). The primary fuel used for the generation of power is Coal. The power station is planned by Nabinagar Power Generating Company, which is a joint venture of National Thermal Power Corporation and Bihar State Electricity Board. The beneficiary states of this power plant were Bihar and West Bengal.

There are 3 units in Operation and they are Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3. The first unit was commissioned in 2016 March with an installation capacity of 660 Megawatt. Whereas the second unit is expected to be commissioned in March 2019 with an installation capacity of 660 Megawatt and the third unit would be also expected to be commissioned in May 2020 with an installation capacity of 660 Megawatt.

How to Reach: Nabinagar thermal power plant can be easily accessed by Train, Road and Air. Nabinagar Road Station is the nearest Railway Station. Aurangabad is just 35 kilometre away from Nabinagar. From Aurangabad, you would get trains to faraway destinations. Transport buses are available to nearby cities and towns from Nabinagar. You would get long route buses from Aurangabad Bus Station. Jay Prakash Narayan Airport in Patna of Bihar is the nearest airport, which is about 167 kilometres away from Nabinagar.
