Mutiara Thermal Power Plant (MTPP) is a 1200 Megawatt (2 units × 600 MW) coal fired thermal plant located in the Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu. It is a project under the implementation of Coastal Energen Private Limited, which is a subsidiary power generation company under the control of Coal and Oil Group.
Mutiara Thermal Power Plant is commissioned in December 2014. It has an approved capacity of 1200 Megawatt and the installed capacity is also 1200 Megawatt. The Status of this Thermal Power Plant is running. The primary fuel used for the generation of power is Coal. The source of coal is domestic coal and imported coal. The 70% of coal is domestically mined from Coal India mine of Orissa and the remaining 30% is imported coal from Indonesia. The plant is utilizing the Sub Critical Technology for Unit 1 and Unit 2 and Super Critical Technology for Unit 3 and Unit 4. The Mutiara Thermal Power Plant is owned and operated by Coastal Energen Private Limited.
The Beneficiary states of thermal power plant are Tamil Nadu and other neighbouring states. The financial source of the thermal power plant are a consortium of Indian banks led by SBI. The Unit sizes of both first and second units are 1200 Megawatt (600 MW x 2) and the unit sizes of both third and fourth units are 1600 Megawatt (800 MW x 2). There are 2 units in operational and they are Unit 1 and Unit 2. The status of third and fourth units are shelved. The first unit started its service in 2014 and the second unit started its service in 2016.
In Stage 1, the first and second units are commissioned, whereas in Stage 2, the third and fourth units are proposed, but it is yet to be commissioned. The first and second units are commissioned in December 2014 with an installed capacity of 600 Megawatt for each units. The third and fourth units would have an installed capacity of 800 Megawatt for each units, but both of the units are yet to be commissioned.

Mutiara Thermal Power Plant is located in the Melamaruthur village of Ottapidaram taluk in the district of Thoothukudi. You can come to this thermal power station via road, rail or air. Regular buses and auto-taxis are available from the nearest towns/cities to the Power Station. Tuticorin railway station and Tuticorin domestic airport are the nearest well-connected Railway Station and Airport.
