Kudgi Super Thermal Power Plant

Kudgi Super Thermal Power Plant.JPG

Kudgi Super Thermal Power Plant is located at the Kudgi village of Basavana Bagewadi Taluk in Bijapur district, Karnataka. It is one among the coal centred thermal power plants of NTPC Limited. The coal for the plant is sourced from National Thermal Power Corporation's Pakhri Barwadih coal block of Jharkhand. The water source of this power plant is from reservoir of Almatti Dam which is built on Krishna River. The primary fuel used for the generation of power for the Kudgi Thermal Power Station is Coal and the Secondary fuel used is Light Diesel Oil.

On its beginning, NTPC, PCKL (state power company) and energy department of the state signed a MoU in Jan 2009, to construct a power station at Kudgi. The project is being planned on an area of 4100 acres. The land is largely unfertile and rocky. The forest clearance was got on September 2010. Now the power plant is operated by the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited and it is also owned by the NTPC Limited of India.

Kudgi Super Thermal Power Project will have an installed capacity of 4000 Megawatt (3x800 Megawatt in first stage and 2x800 Megawatt in second stage). It is National Thermal Power Corporation’s first 800 Megawatt’s supercritical thermal power plant developed in two stages. Doosan Power systems will source Steam Maker for the power station and Toshiba JSW Power Systems will source super-critical steam turbine and generator and L&T Howden will source axial fans to National Thermal Power Corporation for the station. The Construction Power necessary for stage-1 production was drawn from Hubli Electricity Supply Company through two no. of out-and-out 33kV OH lines from Basavana Bagewadi and Mattihal substations of Hubli Electricity Supply Company.

The beneficiary states of this Kudgi Super Thermal Power Plant are Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. There are two stages of execution. The first stage will have a total capacity of 2400 Megawatt with 3 units and the second stage would have a total capacity of 1600 Megawatt with 2 units. The Unit 1 was commissioned in 2016 December with an installed capacity of 800 Megawatt. After that Unit 2 was commissioned in 2017 March with an installed capacity of 800 Megawatt and finally Unit 3 was commissioned in 2018 March with an installed capacity of 800 Megawatt. The approved capacity of Unit 4 and Unit 5 are 800 Megawatt each. But both of them are yet to be installed.
