Kanti Thermal Power Station also called as Muzaffarpur Thermal Power Station is located in Kanti village, and is about 15 kilometres away from Muzaffarpur, which is also 100km away from Patna. It is controlled by the Kanti Bijlee Utpadan Nigam Ltd. (KBUNL), which is a joint venture between Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL) and National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC). The equity shares of the Joint Venture Company are,held with 65 percent for NTPC limited and 35 percent for BSEB.The plant was not been in operation between 2003 and 2013, however restoration of both older units flagged the way for commercial generation of electricity from the end of 2013 onwards.

The Kanti Thermal Power Station is commissioned in 1985. The approved capacity of this thermal power plant is 610 Megawatt and its installed capacity is also 610 Megawatt. The status of this four units of thermal power station is Operational. The coal source of Stage 1 is Eastern Coalfields Limited and Central Coalfields Limited & for Stage 2, it is only Central Coalfields Limited. The water source is River Bodhi Gandak sited at a distance of 4.5 kilometres. The primary fuel used for the generation of power is Coal. This Kanti Thermal Power Station is a joint venture of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL) and National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC Limited) came under Kanti Bijlee Utpadan Nigam Ltd. (KBUNL). The Beneficiary States of first stage is only Bihar (100 percent allocation). The Beneficiary states of second stage of this thermal power plant were Bihar (75 percent allocation), Orissa (GRID Corporation of State), Jharkhand (Bijli Veteran Nigam Limited), Sikkim (State Government) and West Bengal (SEDCL).

The Unit size of Stage 1 is220 MW (2 x 110 Megawatt)&for Stage 2, it is390 MW (2 x 195 Megawatt). The total units in operation were 4 and they are Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3 and Unit 4.
