Kakrapar Atomic Power Station Surat Gujarat

The Kakrapar Atomic Power Station is situated in Surat District. The location of the plant is at Moti Cher, East of Surat, Gujarat. The total installed capacity of the plant is 440 MWe and the firm capacity of the plant is 404 MWe.

This is a fully operating plant and the power is mainly used as base load. The reactor used here is a Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) and the electric power from the plant is mainly connected to the regional grid. The main source of water for the plant is from Tapti river and by 2012 under new agreement, the safeguard measures are implemented. The plant has 4 different units and the IAEA-ID of the 4 units are IN-9 Kakrapar-1, IN-10 Kakrapar-2, IN-30 Kakrapar-3 and IN-31 Kakrapar-4 respectively. The first two units has an installed capacity of 202 MWe and the last two units has an installed capacity of 700 MWe. The construction of the first two units starts on 01-December- 1984 and 01- April-1985 and are commissioned on 06-May-1993 and 01-September-1995 respectively. The third and fourth units are commissioned in 2010. NPCIL and BHEL Bhopal are the reactor and turbine manufacturer. The reactor model used is PHWR (four-loop) and the generator manufacturer is BHEL Hardwar. Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) is the owner and construction contractor of the plant. The operating company of the plant is also NPCIL.
