Hirakud I Burla Hydro Project

Hirakud Hydroelectric Project Burla is erected 15 km Northwest from Sambalpur of Odisha, India. The power plant is commissioned in 1957. It has an approved and installed capacity of 276 MW. The type of power project is Major due to its greater capacity than 25 MW. The status of Hirakud I Burla Hydro Project is completed and are functional. The power project is situated in the Mahanadi River and the main Reservoir is Hirakud. The name of dam in which the hydro project is built is Hirakud Dam. The power plant is owned by the Odisha State Government and the operator of the plant is Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC).

The beneficiary states of the power plant are Odisha and nearby States. The hydro project is completed and started the generation of power from 1957 onwards. The total number of turbines in the plant is seven. The capacity of first two turbines commissioned are 49.5 MW, the third and fourth turbine each have 32 MW and the last three turbines have 37.5 MW each. Kaplan is the type of turbine used in the plant. The manufacturer of turbines of first two units of plant is by the English Electric UK and the turbines of third and fourth units is by the J.M. Voith Germany and the turbines of last three units is by the Hitachi Japan. The Generators are manufactured by the GEC Alston, Voith Siemens and Hitachi Japan.

The unit size of power plant is 276 MW having seven total units and all the seven units are commissioned.
