Durgapur Thermal Power Station

Durgapur Thermal Power Station is situated near Waria Railway Station in Durgapur of Burdwan District, which is five kilometre away from Durgapur city in the state of West Bengal. The power plant is one among the coal based power plants of Damodar Valley Corporation.

Durgapur Thermal Power Station was launched in the 1960’s of previous century with two 75 Megawatt units and one 140 Megawatt unit in the first stage. Added 210 Megawatt unit was added to the plant in the early 1980s of previous century to increase supplies to the growing industrial demand. The foremost 2 units of the Power Plant had to be de-commissioned after a fire mishap in 1985.

Durgapur Thermal Power Station is commissioned in 1966 with an approved capacity of 350 Megawatt. It has an installed capacity of 350 Megawatt. The status of this thermal power station is closed for Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3 and is operational for Unit 4. The primary fuel used for the generation of power is Coal. The type of coal is Bituminous. This Durgapur Thermal Power Station is owned by Damodar Valley Corporation. The sole beneficiary state of this thermal power station is West Bengal. The type of power station is Subcritical. The Shareholder of this thermal power plant is Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC).

The unit sizes of this thermal power plant is as follows,

For Stage 1, there are 3 units with an installed capacity of 75 Megawatt for Unit 1, 75 Megawatt for Unit 2 and 140 Megawatt for Unit 3. All the 3 units of Stage 1 are closed.

For Stage 2, there is one unit with an installed capacity of 220 Megawatt and is operational. There are four units with 3 are closed and one is operational.

Unit 1 is commissioned with an installed capacity of 75 Megawatt. Its status is closed. Unit 2 is also commissioned with an installed capacity of 75 Megawatt. Unit 3 is commissioned in December, 1966 with an installed capacity of 140 Megawatt. Units 3 is also closed. Unit 4 was commissioned in September 1982 with an installed capacity of 220 Megawatt. The status of Unit 4 is operational. The Unit 3 has ABL that make boilers and General Electric Company make turbine-generators, while Unit 4 has boiler, turbine and generator are of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) make.
